  • Pruning trees if a good choice for many reasons. Most species adapted to grow in tight forests where light only reached their leaves from above. In an urban environment, light reaches most trees from all angles, causing a number of growth structure problems. Regular pruning helps prevent damage caused by over-extended or tangled branches that are susceptible to storm damage and bark wounds. Pruning also helps maintains trees for their planting location, so the trees around your property can fully grow without threatening your house or other structures.

  • Every 3-5 years for best practices and in almost every season of the year! For our environment here in Bozeman, most tree and shrub species can be pruned at any time of the year. Only a select few species in our area need to be pruned in winter or after blossom. However, we always take into account the specific environmental risks to every single tree as to not over-prune and cause further stress. Properly caring for urban trees is a constant balance!

  • Never! Unless a tree is deemed a hazard and needs removal, trees can always be pruned in a way to help guide them into a healthier future. Though it is best to prune most species every 3-5 years, even a mature tree that has not been pruned will benefit from a regular maintenance plan.

  • Yes! Whether it is a newly planted tree or a mature hardwood, trees benefit from regular watering during our summer months. Drought stress is the root of almost all health problems for trees in the Gallatin Valley. Water your trees with a deep-root soaking 1-2 a week will help to keep them happy. Long watering sessions less frequently provides more benefits to the root system and moisture in the soil rather than short daily sessions where the water does not penetrate deep into the earth.

  • It depends on many factors. We factor tree health, age, location and potential hazards it poses to people and property in our professional assessment. Dead trees provide the most habitat in an urban forest, but are not always feasible to keep. We discuss all your options and ultimately it is always your decision as the property owner.
